Odd Noises from Your AC? Here’s What You Need to Know

You know what your air conditioner is supposed to sound like. It’s basically supposed to blend into the background and be quiet. Unless the house is dead silent, you shouldn’t even hear the air vents. But now you notice something odd, a noise you haven’t heard before, and it’s coming from your air conditioner.

What is it? And does it mean you need AC repair in Little Rock? Let’s go over some of the most common sounds that your air conditioner could be making and what they mean.

Humming or Electrical Buzzing Noise

Buzzing sounds are always electrical, which means there’s a problem with some wiring or electrical components (like the fan motor). Either way, it’s not a very welcoming sound. This is one you really need to call an HVAC technician about as soon as you hear it, otherwise you run the increased risk of an electrical fire.

Loud Bumps or Bangs

When you hear a big bang, like a small child beating on your ductwork in the ceiling, that means there’s a loose part somewhere that needs to be tightened. A loose part is a problem because it can knock into other components and cause additional damage, then rack up repair costs at the same time.

Pesky Clicking Noise

If you hear an odd clicking sound, it’s likely coming from your thermostat–not your air conditioner. Your thermostat controls the function of your air conditioner, though, because without it, your AC wouldn’t know when to turn on or off.

When you’re not getting the temperature you want, it could be because the thermostat isn’t calibrated properly. When this happens, the information it’s trying to send to the AC to turn it on never goes through, or it goes through prematurely. Then you get weird on and off times and it seems like your AC is the problem.

Metal Howling Sounds

Metal isn’t supposed to howl, but when you have metal-on-metal with no lubrication, that’s exactly what happens. It’s important to make sure you have annual maintenance because this is when your technician will handle all of these odd jobs for your air conditioner.

When you hear this sound before your next scheduled maintenance, it could be a sign of aging. Your air conditioner will have to work for longer cycles as it ages just to achieve the same results it always has, so that lubrication will run out faster.

Peace, at Least

Let’s help you get those noises put to rest so you can finally get some rest. Now that you know how serious these sounds are and what they can mean for your air conditioner, it’s important to make sure you keep an ear out and point out when there’s a problem. Once you hear it, you won’t be able to stop listening to it until there’s a fix. Make sure you stay on top of any odd sounds coming out of your air conditioner as they happen.
